The Growing Importance of Sterile Sample Bags in Modern Laboratories
As the requirements for sample collection, transportation, and storage continue to escalate in fields such as life sciences, environmental monitoring, food safety, and clinical medicine, a seemingly ordinary “sample bag” plays an extremely crucial role. This article focuses on the SDLABIO sterile sampling bag, a sterile sampling bag with a wire strip closure mechanism, specifically designed for occasions with strict requirements for sample integrity, high cleanliness, and non-contamination.
What is a sterile sample bag?
Sampling bags are disposable, flexible, bag-shaped containers used to collect liquid, semi-liquid, particulate, or solid samples. A key feature of this product is its wire-sealed closure mechanism: the bag opening is equipped with one or more metal wires (such as galvanized round wire, flat tin-plated wire, etc.) – which, through folding, sealing, pinching, and rolling, form a reliable closure, preventing sample leakage or external contamination. This closure method offers greater security and airtightness than simple heat sealing or self-adhesive bags.

Main features and advantages of plastic sample bags
- High Cleanliness & Sterility Guarantee
The product undergoes sterilization treatment (such as gamma rays, ethylene oxide, radiation, etc.), and the internal components are maintained as sterile as possible from manufacturing to packaging and before use. For biological samples or trace detection samples, if the sampling bag itself contains contaminants (such as microorganisms, nucleases, pyrogens, etc.), it will seriously affect the subsequent analysis results.
- Wire sealing strip closure system enhances airtightness
Compared to ordinary self-sealing bags, heat-sealing bags, or zipper bags, this type of sample bag is equipped with a metal wire sealing strip at the opening. During use, the bag is closed by folding/rolling/pinching the wire, making it more reliable than a simple plastic seal and more suitable for environments involving transportation, shaking, freezing, and vibration.
- Suitable for various sample types and scenarios
This product is not only suitable for liquid samples, but also for solid, semi-solid, particulate, and filter membrane samples. It can be used in multiple fields such as food safety, environmental monitoring, agricultural samples, water sampling, microbial sampling, and clinical sample transportation.
- Lightweight, space-saving, and cost-effective
Compared to traditional rigid containers (such as glass bottles, stainless steel containers, and hard-shell plastic containers), flexible sterile bags are lighter, take up less space, have lower transportation costs, and are easier to dispose of after use. This lightweight advantage is particularly significant for high-throughput, high-volume sampling environments (such as environmental monitoring, food production plant sampling, and agricultural soil sampling).
- Highly customizable
Different specifications (bag capacity, bag size, plastic thickness, writing area, printed label area, color, etc.) can be customized to meet different customer needs. Custom designs can be made according to user processes (such as automated sampling, mechanized handling, standardized labeling).

How to use sterile sampling bags?
Preparation before operation
- Ensure that the lab sample bags are stored in a clean area or the sampling preparation area, that the outer bag is undamaged, and that the sterilization seal is intact.
- Check the bag information (e.g., batch number, sterilization date, capacity specifications, bag material description).
- Wear appropriate sampling protective equipment (e.g., clean gloves, mask, protective clothing, disinfectant alcohol spray, etc.) to avoid cross-contamination of samples.
- Record the sample number, time, location, and operator information in the designated writing or labeling area on the bag using an oil-based/sterile pen. Some bags have a white writing strip or printed labeling area.
- Prepare sampling tools (such as sterile gloves, sampling sticks, tweezers, measuring cylinders, funnels, refrigerated labels, sample transport containers, etc.) and sterilize them according to standard procedures.
Sampling operation
- Opening the Bag: Most bags with wire-stripped seals have a tear strip or tear mark on the top. After tearing, pull open the bag, using the external grip on the label/handle to ensure you don’t touch the clean inside of the bag.
- Sampling: Take an appropriate amount of sample according to the sample type (liquid, solid, semi-solid), avoiding exceeding the bag’s capacity markings. For liquid samples, it is recommended to use sterile graduated cylinders, funnels, or disposable pipettes to avoid splashing or contaminating the bag walls. For solid/semi-solid samples, use sterile tweezers or sterile gloves for bagging. Maintain sample representativeness as much as possible, such as by stirring and mixing thoroughly.
- Filling the bag: Gently place the sample into the bag. If it is a liquid, avoid excessive rinsing or splashing. Leave sufficient sealing area according to the sample volume.
- Pre-sealing the bag opening: Pre-fold or roll the bag opening as recommended by the manufacturer.
- To close the bag using a wire strip: Fold the top strip at the bag opening in half, so that the wire portion wraps around the opening. Pinch and bend the wire strip by hand until it is tightly closed by folding/rolling. Specific steps are as follows: Fold the bag opening one to several times (e.g., 2-3 times) to reduce any gaps. Align the two ends of the wire strip and bend it downwards until it fits snugly against the bag opening. If necessary, gently twist or pinch the ends to enhance the seal.
- Check the seal: Ensure the bag opening is flat, not loose, and that the wire end does not puncture the bag or gloves. High-quality product designs will extend the wire end to the external protective strip to prevent punctures or cuts to gloves.
- Labeling and Recording: After sealing, label the bag with necessary information (such as sample number, sampler, time, location, temperature, and other remarks) in the designated writing area. If necessary, place the bag in a secondary container, refrigerated container, or transport box, and record the location.
- Storage and Transportation: Depending on the sample type, place the bags in a suitable transport case or refrigeration system. Some bags are suitable for temperatures ranging from -70 °C to +80 °C. Avoid subjecting the bags to severe impacts, punctures, inversion leaks, overpressure, or direct sunlight. If vibration or tipping may occur during transport, it is recommended to place the bags in a rigid secondary container for protection.
- Laboratory Receiving and Opening: In the analytical laboratory, operators should wear protective equipment, remove the bags according to the markings, cut or open the bag opening, taking care to avoid contamination. After opening, analysis should be performed as soon as possible, or the sample should be placed under appropriate storage conditions (e.g., frozen or refrigerated).
Precautions for using sterile lab sampling bags
- Avoid overfilling: Do not fill the bag beyond the recommended capacity, otherwise the bag opening will not close reliably.
- Avoid severe compression: Maintain a certain amount of sample in the bag to prevent sudden pressure increases during transportation that could cause the bag to rupture.
- Avoid metal tip puncture: High-quality products should have a protective design on the wire tip to prevent puncturing the sterile plastic bags or injuring your hands.
- Complete records: Each sampling should be documented with labeling, numbering, time, location, and operator’s signature to ensure sample traceability.
- Avoid resealing: Although some bags are designed to be resealed or opened, to ensure sample reliability, it is recommended to seal and analyze once.
- Comply with disposal requirements: Sample bags should be disposed of according to biosafety or chemical safety regulations after use and should not be discarded arbitrarily.
Recommended application scenarios
- Food Safety Testing
Food factories, agricultural processing plants, and catering service establishments, under the HACCP management system, are required to routinely collect food samples, surface swab samples, water samples, and soil samples. Using sterile sampling bags ensures that samples are not contaminated during their journey from the site to the testing laboratory, guaranteeing reliable test results.
- Environmental Monitoring
Environmental protection departments or third-party testing agencies have high requirements for airtight, contamination-proof, and leak-proof sampling when collecting samples from water bodies, sludge, soil, and airborne dust. Wire-stripped sample bags offer advantages in this area.
- Clinical and Biomedical Research
While most biomedical samples use dedicated plasma tubes and centrifuge tubes, flexible bagging may be used in special scenarios (such as field sampling, animal samples, and tissue sample bags). Sterile and well-sealed sampling bags can improve the integrity of the sample chain.
- Agriculture and Aquaculture
Examples include collecting farmland soil, plant tissues, aquaculture water samples, and feed samples. This type of bagging is ideal for large sample volumes, dispersed locations, and complex transportation environments.
- Quality Control and Industrial Testing
In processing plants, production lines, and automated systems, sampling (such as of raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products) is sometimes required for microbiological and chemical testing. Sterile specimen bag offer flexibility, low cost, and portability.
- Field/Indoor Sampling
In environments such as the field, on ships, and construction sites, rigid containers are inconvenient to carry and easily broken. Flexible bags with wire strip closures are particularly suitable.
