Are sterile pipette tips needed for gels?

It depends on the specific experimental requirements and sample type.

If the DNA/RNA samples in the gel need to be recovered and purified (such as gel excision recovery for cloning, sequencing), sterile pipette tips must be used to avoid exogenous nucleases (DNase/RNase) from degrading the samples.
Alternative solution: Use pre-sterilized nuclease-free disposable pipette tips (DNase/RNase-Free Tips).

Pipette tips gel loading​ have a slimmer tip, allowing them to penetrate deeper into the lanes and reduce lateral diffusion of the sample during pipetting. Regular pipette tips are better suited for general pipetting.

Disposable tips are recommended to avoid cross-contamination. If reuse is necessary, they must be thoroughly sterilized with high temperature and high pressure, and confirmed to not affect sample purity.

Some models are available with filters to effectively prevent aerosol contamination and are suitable for highly sensitive experiments such as molecular biology and PCR.
