FAQ of empty pipette tip boxes
Can the pipette tip disposal box accommodate all brands of tips?
Most universal and LTS tips can be accommodated, but it is recommended to confirm that the tip length and diameter are compatible with the rack to ensure smooth access.
Can the pipette tip rack box be autoclaved?
Yes, the rack remains structurally stable after autoclaving (121°C, 15 psi, 15–20 minutes).
How many pipette tips in a box?
It depends on the brand, tip size, and packaging style — there’s no universal number. Here are the common cases:
1. Standard racked pipette tips
- 10 µL or 20 µL tips: usually 96 tips per rack
- 200 µL tips: usually 96 tips per rack
- 1000 µL tips: usually 96 tips per rack
- Boxes may contain 1, 5, 10, or more racks, so totals could be 96, 480, 960, etc.
2. Bulk or bagged tips
- Often sold as 500 – 1000 tips per bag, then packed in cases of several bags.
3. Refill systems (stacked or reload)
- Packs contain multiple trays (e.g., 5 × 96) for quick reloading of racks.
4. Specialized or robotic tips
- Automation tips (e.g., for Hamilton, Tecan, Beckman) come in boxes or plates of 96, 384, or custom counts depending on the platform.
What to do with empty pipette tip boxes?
1. Reuse them
- Reload with new tips: Many brands sell refill systems (stacks or inserts) designed to drop into empty boxes.
- Repurpose for storage: Great for holding small lab items (tubes, screws, PCR caps) or even as temporary sample organizers.
- Training practice: Useful for pipetting exercises with students or interns — no need to open sterile racks.
2. Recycle them
- Most tip boxes are polypropylene (PP), which is recyclable.
- Check with your institution: Some labs have dedicated tip-box recycling bins or agreements with vendors (Rainin and other companies even run take-back programs).
- Make sure they are clean (non-biohazardous) before putting them in a recycling stream.
3. Dispose properly if contaminated
- If boxes have been in BSL-2/BSL-3 labs or are marked as biohazard: Autoclave them first, then discard in plastic recycling (if your institution allows) or regulated waste. If no recycling option exists, they may need to go into solid biohazard waste.
How to autoclave pipette tip boxes?
1. Check the material first
- Most pipette tip storage boxes are made of polypropylene (PP), which is autoclavable.
- Confirm by checking the recycling mark (#5 PP) or manufacturer documentation.
2. Preparation
- Remove any remaining tips (unless you’re autoclaving them too).
- Open the lid or set it ajar — pressure can deform sealed boxes if steam can’t vent.
- If you’re autoclaving tips inside box of pipette tips, leave the tips in the rack and keep the lid loosely closed to maintain sterility.
- For biohazardous boxes, make sure they’re rinsed or pre-cleaned if heavily soiled.
3. Autoclave settings
- Temperature: 121 °C (standard steam sterilization)
- Pressure: ~15 psi (1 atm above ambient)
- Time: 15–20 minutes is typical for empty boxes or racks. Use longer times (up to 30 minutes) only if sterilizing tips + boxes together.
4. After the run
- Allow plastic pipette tips box to cool inside the autoclave before removing — hot polypropylene warps easily if moved too soon.
- If you need to dry them, you can run a dry cycle or leave them open in a sterile hood.
5. Pro tips
- To prevent condensation pooling, place boxes at a slight angle or on a wire rack.
- Label boxes with autoclave tape if you need a visual indicator of sterilization.
- Avoid stacking too many boxes tightly; steam must circulate around them.
